The clock projector works by projecting an image onto a flat service, it works by having a bright backlight which then uses lenses to display the time on a wall. There are however clock projectors that use halogen lamps as the backlight to project a more powerful image onto the surface, these are much brighter however they use more power and heat up a lot, and are not ideal for the small alarm clocks that people want to buy.

There is a wide range to choose from which includes basic clock projectors that will display just the time, to more powerful halogen backlight projectors that can project a real analogue clock onto the surface. Most clock projectors today have a digital display, so it will show the time as digital numbers and not as an analogue format. They are run by batteries or by the mains and the more modern versions which have led backlights will generally use less power. The main uses of clock projectors are for showing the time, however many have been adapted for other purposes, such as alarms, there are also versions which have inbuilt radios and Ipod docking systems.
